Economic Diversification Assistant

Located in our Norton, Va. office, the Economic Diversification Assistant will focus on one of our three project areas:

  • Renewable Energy Development
  • Economic Development on Formerly Mined Lands
  • Community/Grassroots Engagement on Economic Development Issues

We are flexible as to which of those projects an intern would focus their attention, and envision an internship designed around just one of the three areas.

All three areas share the following responsibilities and opportunities:

  • Develop and implement communications strategies with our partners and stakeholders, including graphic design, written communications, and web-based outreach
  • Perform research pertaining to at least one of the above mentioned project areas
  • Assist with outreach and logistics for public events

The intern will gain:

  • In-depth experience in fields of renewable energy, abandoned mine land redevelopment, and/or community engagement
  • First hand experience working in an emerging field in our region
  • Understandings of public policy development and implementation and how local, state and federal government interact in the world of economic development
  • Ability to directly apply skills obtained during undergraduate studies into real world applications

Time Commitment

We seek a student who is able to commit to between 10 and 20 hours per week.

  • Committed to environmental issues in the Appalachian region
  • Highly detail orientated
  • Great communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Can meet deadlines and work well in a fast-paced office
  • Sense of humor
  • Excitement to learn about the inner workings of non-profits
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc)
  • Self-starter and can work somewhat independently
