Join us on Wednesday, May 26 at 11 a.m. for our release of a new tool that monitors the growth of trees and other vegetation on old surface coal mines in Central Appalachia.
Appalachian Voices, Skytruth and other regional partners are hosting a webinar that will provide the first glimpse of the Central Appalachian Mine Reforestation Assessment tool. This tool makes use of satellite imagery to monitor and characterize the state of reclamation and vegetation recovery on surface coal mines in Central Appalachia from 1984 to the present.
During the webinar, we will release a report months in the making that examines the state of mine recovery in the Central Appalachian region. Links to the data used, the algorithms used to produce the data, and a webmap for the general public to use will also be made available.
Funded through a grant from National Geographic Society, this data set and map tool will be made fully available to regulators, researchers and the general public to help understand the current level of mining and surface mine cleanup in the region.
Join us May 26 for the first glimpse of this new tool and to learn more!
