Matt Hepler

Central Appalachian Environmental Scientist

Matt has a background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and environmental resources, with years of experience in GIS and hydrology. He transitioned to advocacy work to help communities affected by coal mining, focusing on environmental monitoring, community engagement, and policy initiatives.

Since joining Appalachian Voices in 2017, he has worked to protect the people and waterways of Central Appalachia from the harmful impacts of mining. Based in the Norton, Virginia, office, Matt is passionate about preserving the region’s landscapes and enjoys hiking, square dancing and exploring its rivers.
