Dominion Energy-backed bill faces historic opposition in Va. House of Delegates

Statement from Tom Cormons, Appalachian Voices Executive Director, on passage today by the Virginia House of Delegates of electric rate bill HB 1558:

This version has been updated as of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 12.

“The bill that passed today contains a blank check to Dominion to bury power lines using our money without regulatory analysis of whether it’s a reasonable and prudent use of ratepayer money. Governor Northam must act to protect Virginians and reconsider his support for the proposal until this egregious provision is addressed.

“The tides are changing in Virginia. Today, Dominion faced more opposition to its legislation than it has at any time in recent memory. Voters sent a clear message last November that was reinforced today when 35 delegates defended Virginia families and businesses by voting against this consumer rip-off.

“We commend the delegates who have sided with ratepayers as they work to improve this deeply flawed legislation. Barring significant changes, we hope they will continue to stand firm in opposition as the process moves forward.”
