According to T. Edward Nickens, chairman of the 2005 Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards, “These are the highest conservation honors given in the state. These individuals, scientists, government bodies, and others are North Carolina’s conservation heroes, and their stories are as remarkable as they are inspiring.”

Sen. Albertson has served for many years as the Senate Chair of the Environmental Review Commission, as chair of the Senate’s Aquaculture Study Commission, and as co-chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural and Economic Resources. Two specific achievements prompted his nomination for Legislator of the Year. He played a key role in the establishment of the state’s saltwater recreational fishing license and provided leadership in advocating for the General Assembly’s Global Warming Commission bill.
