[North Carolina] A bill expected to be introduced in the N.C. House the week of April 30 (2007), would give landowners who manage their land for wildlife and conservation benefits some degree of property tax relief. House Bill 1889 has more than 80 sponsors in the N.C. General Assembly, according to the N.C. office of Environmental Defense. Spokespersons from NCED say the bill will help protect the state’s forests and farmland. “Equitable property tax treatment gives landowners across the state something to cheer about,” said Will McDow, forestry specialist with the NCED. “These are landowners who are reducing their income to protect land that provides all of us with benefits, such as clean water. These landowners should not be penalized for doing the right thing.”
