LEXINGTON, N.C. — On Thursday, Aug. 13, residents and advocates will hold a community meeting to discuss Duke Energy’s plans for two methane gas-fired power plants in Davie County and the company’s largest liquefied natural gas storage facility in Davidson County.
Davidson and Davie counties are at a pivotal moment, facing the rapid expansion of methane gas infrastructure that could reshape the area for decades to come. Duke Energy is proposing to build massive methane gas-fired power plants in the heart of rural agricultural land along the Yadkin River.
These projects raise serious concerns about the health, well-being and long-term economic stability of Davie and Davidson counties. The gas plants would harm the quality and health of the Yadkin River and cause air pollution, harm public health, lower property values and lead to the loss of farmland and forested land. Duke Energy is also allowed to charge customers for gas power plants and for 100% of the gas burned to power them.
Duke Energy has stated that the predicted increase in energy demand behind its plans to build new gas plants is driven in large part by projected data center growth, while also admitting to actively recruiting data centers.
At the meeting, attendees will have a chance to learn more about Duke’s proposed projects and their potential impacts, connect with other community members and advocates and learn how to protect the community and advocate for a future that prioritizes rural integrity, a healthy environment and affordable energy. Refreshments will be provided.
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 13, 6:30-8 p.m.
WHERE: Reeds United Methodist Church (4731 W Old Hwy 64, Lexington, NC 27295)
