Black Lung Awareness Day at the West Virginia Capitol

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On Thursday, March 20, 2025, coal miners and their families from across West Virginia’s coal-producing communities will gather at the Capitol building for Black Lung Awareness Day. Organizations including the United Mine Workers of America, the Black Lung Association, Appalachian Voices, the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center and more will join together to advocate for increased benefits, protection and awareness about black lung disease and its continued impact on the state. This event coincides with HCR 72, proclaiming March 20, 2025, as “Black Lung Awareness Day” in West Virginia in order to “pay tribute to those who have or are suffering from coal worker’s pneumoconiosis and to help reduce the risk of black lung disease in coal miners.”

When: March 20, 2025, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. ET
Where: West Virginia State Capitol, Lower Rotunda
Why: To advocate for increased benefits, protections and awareness about black lung disease with state lawmakers and the general public.
