HENDERSON, N.C. — On Thursday, Aug. 1, community members impacted by the proposed Moriah Energy Center will hold a press conference to share their concerns about plans for the facility ahead of the Division of Air Quality’s public hearing on the air permit application. The Moriah Energy Center is a liquified natural gas storage facility proposed by Dominion Energy to be built in Rougemont, near the Durham and Graham County borders.

WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 1 at 5 p.m.
WHERE: Vance-Granville Community College, at the courtyard (200 Community College Rd, Henderson, NC 27536)
WHO: NoMEC (Neighbors Opposed to Moriah Energy Center) and Appalachian Voices

The press conference will feature impacted community members who oppose the Moriah Energy Center. Reporters attending are encouraged to stay for the 6 p.m. public hearing and listen to comments from the community and advocates.

The Moriah Energy Center — if built — would initially store 25 million gallons of liquified natural gas in an aboveground tank, with plans to construct another tank in the future to double the capacity. The liquefaction plant would be powered by gas combustion, which would produce air pollution regulated by the Clean Air Act, thus requiring an air permit for the facility. The air permit is the last permit Dominion needs to obtain before they can begin construction of the facility.
