WOODFIN, N.C. — A “Know Your Risks” event on June 27 will help Buncombe County, North Carolina, residents learn about hazards from landslides, wildfires and floods — and how they can better prepare for potential impacts with adaptation strategies designed to protect their homes, property and families.

The event will be held at Friends-Montessori School, 23 Community Road in Woodfin, from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature presentations from experts as well as a guided gallery walkthrough of maps and plans developed to update the community’s understanding of its extreme-weather risks and vulnerabilities. Those interested in attending should register in advance and can sign up to receive a printed, property-specific risk assessment and one-on-one support to understand the risks and discuss potential mitigation actions for their specific properties.

The event is part of an ongoing Climate Smart Communities Initiative project in Buncombe County that has focused specifically on Woodfin and Swannanoa. It is hosted by the town of Woodfin, Fernleaf, Appalachian Voices and other partner organizations.
