On Friday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m., the town of Pound will unveil a new labor history monument, titled “Labor in Motion.” Based on feedback from Pound residents, the monument takes the form of a public stage that will be a cornerstone of a pocket park currently under development in downtown Pound.
The unveiling event will feature live local music, speeches from labor leaders from the United Mine Workers of America and the Communications Workers of America, and food prepared by the team of Chef Torrece “Chef T” Gregoire.
The monument was funded by a $217,000 grant from the Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia project. The town worked with Virginia Tech and Appalachian Voices, along with local artists Dana Jo Cooley and Johnny Hagerman, and a large team of community members to design the stage, which features both masonry and stained glass to reflect Pound’s specific contributions to the labor movement in our region while uplifting stories that have historically been ignored.
Those interested in attending can register here. The monument is located at 8441 Main Street in Pound.
