On Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m., residents and advocates will hold a press conference in Lexington, North Carolina, on Williams Transco’s proposed compressor station expansion. The expansion is part of Transco’s multi-state Southeast Supply Enhancement Project. The press conference will precede a public hearing held by regulators from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
The press conference will take place at 223 S Main St, Lexington, NC 27292, in the parking lot. Please join us to learn about community members’ concerns with this project.
The public hearing will be held nearby at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center. This is the final North Carolina permit Transco needs for this project. The public can attend the meeting and make comments about the proposal.
Transco wants to expand its existing compressor stations located near Lexington and Mooresville with gas-fired turbines. Gas-powered compressor stations release chemicals that have negative impacts on nearby residents’ health. Both stations are located near air monitors that have recorded unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, in recent years, with levels in Mooresville violating the federal standard and the amount in Lexington just below the federal standard.
Scientists have found that there is no safe level of exposure to PM2.5, and exposure can cause severe impacts on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Transco is not taking into account the already high level of pollution in these communities in its air permit application.
We hope you will attend the press conference, publicize the hearing and, if possible, report on what the public has to say.
In addition, another public hearing will be held in Mooresville, where Transco wants to expand another existing compressor station, on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. That hearing will be held at the Lake Norman High School Auditorium.
