TAZEWELL, Va. — The Solar Workgroup of Southwest Virginia and Secure Solar Futures are hosting a ribbon cutting for the YMCA’s new solar power system with a community event about local solar energy at the Tazewell Four Seasons YMCA on Feb. 20 between 3 and 5 p.m.

Local community members are invited to discuss potential next steps for solar in the Tazewell community and the Southwest Virginia coalfields. The event will feature a brief panel discussion followed by tours of the solar array.

“This step by the Four Seasons is leading the way for Tazewell community facilities in utilizing clean energy for energy savings and community resilience,” said Appalachian Voices’ Southwest Virginia Solar and Electrification Projects Manager Austin Counts. “We hope community members will join us to celebrate the occasion and discuss other opportunities in the county.”

The event welcomes community members and leaders from any Southwest Virginia community interested in discussing existing or new opportunities for solar power and backup energy development at the building and town levels. Food and drink will be provided as well as an opportunity to tour the Growing Together Community Garden.

“By going solar, the Tazewell Four Seasons YMCA will save money on energy that they can invest into their mission of serving the community while also helping the environment,” said Erik Curren, Director of Marketing for Secure Solar Futures.

The solar event in Tazewell is free and open to the public. Participants can RSVP at swvasolar.org.
