Bison Farming on the Rise

“Some people golf. Some people go fishing,” said Jeff Peloquin, …”For me, it’s raising buffalo.”

According to a recent article in the Charlotte News-Observer, bison farming is booming across the Tarheel state, and across the country. Over 38 farms exist in North Carolina alone. Nationwide, over 230,000 bison were being raised in 2002.

Wild bison could have been sighted in North Carolina as few as 300 years ago. They were also sighted as far southeast as Georgia.

Most farm bison are now raised on small family farms, and 90% of herds remain less than 100 strong.

Pretty easy to handle apparently. A bison farm would be an interesting thing to replace the garden and birdfeeders. 🙂
