Oct. 20 & Nov. 9: Davidson County meetings on Duke Energy’s massive methane gas proposal

Davidson County Planning Board meeting
Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.

Davidson County Commissioners meeting
Monday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m.

Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas are planning a massive buildout of dirty energy infrastructure in Davie and Davidson counties on the Yadkin River to ultimately power data centers. The companies want to use land zoned for homes and farms in Davidson County for its project.

The Davie-Davidson Energy Complex includes what would be the largest liquefied gas storage facility in company history, two methane gas-fired power plants on Perkins Game Land across the river in Davie County, and a pipeline running under the Yadkin to connect the two sites.

Davidson County will soon hold two important meetings on rezoning 1,600 acres of land for this project. First, the county planning board will consider the project on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and then the board of commissioners will cast a deciding vote on Monday, Nov. 9. If the rezoning is denied, Duke and PNG cannot move forward with this project.

Duke and PNG want to build this energy complex to serve data centers that don’t exist yet. If the Davie-Davidson Energy Complex moves forward, we could see an explosion of data centers in the region.

This development would:

  • Permanently alter this area’s rural, natural character
  • Extract hundreds of thousands of gallons of water from the Yadkin River every day for cooling
  • Remove farmland, forests and portions of Perkins Game Land
  • Industrialize this stretch of the Yadkin River, which is a high priority conservation area
  • Expose nearby communities to harmful air pollution and a higher risk of negative health impacts
  • Leave customers of Duke and electric cooperatives to pay for this project through higher electric bills

Protect your community and show up to tell decisionmakers: say no to Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas!
