The proposed acquisition of Dominion Energy by Florida-based NextEra Energy comes at a critical time when Virginia customers are facing skyrocketing electric bills, driven in large part by fossil fuel investments and the growth of data centers. The current deal appears to be aimed at taking advantage of Virginia’s data center growth.

The proposal as filed could have major consequences for Virginians related to rising electric bills, Virginia’s move to clean energy, and programs that help strengthen the grid and save money for households, such as energy efficiency and net metering.

NextEra also has a mixed record when it comes to buying utilities. Regulators rejected the company’s attempted merger in Hawaii and a proposed deal in Texas. NextEra withdrew its bid for a South Carolina utility after facing strong opposition.

NextEra’s history in Florida also raises serious questions. NextEra’s subsidiary utility, Florida Power & Light, recently raised customer bills by nearly $7 billion while receiving one of the highest allowed profits, or returns on equity, in the country.

Additionally, public reports about FPL include allegations of political misconduct and election interference that led to a $150 million settlement.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission will decide by Jan. 11, 2027, whether to approve the proposed merger. You can weigh in on the proposal by submitting a written comment to the SCC. You can also watch the public hearing starting on Tuesday, Nov.17, at 10 a.m. by attending in person or watching online.

Your voice matters in this decision that could impact communities in Virginia for decades to come.
