Tell Gov. Stein: No SSEP Pipeline!

Tell Gov. Stein: Stop SSEP!

Communities across North Carolina have been fighting Williams Transco’s proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement Project for over a  year. Five local governments, including Guilford, Davidson and Davidson counties along with the town of Midway and city of Greensboro,  have gone on the record raising concerns around this project.

Now, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality will decide whether or not to grant key permits for the SSEP project before the end of the year. Governor Stein has the power to direct the DEQ to deny the permits for this dangerous, polluting project. Tell Gov. Stein to stop SSEP!

How to take action against the SSEP:

1. Call the governor’s office at (919) 814-2000 (select option 5)

  • Sample script — feel free to use these if helpful, or use your own words!
    • Hi my name is ______ and I’m calling to ask you to please direct the DEQ to deny air and water permits for Transco’s proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement Project.
    • Local governments such as Guilford, Forsyth, and Davidson counties along with Greensboro and the Town of Midway have expressed concern and asked the Department of Environmental Quality and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny the permits for Transco’s proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement Project, so Governor Stein should listen!
    • Governor Stein should be concerned about the unnecessary proposed gas pipeline buildout in the South that would threaten our drinking water supply, jeopardize the safety of impacted communities, harm natural resources and increase our electric bills.
      • Feel free to share your personal concerns
    • Please direct the DEQ to deny the air and water quality permits for the SSEP project!

[Tag Governor Stein] I am concerned about the proposed methane gas pipeline buildout in our state because it could raise our electric bills, pollute our drinking water, and make climate change worse. It’s time you protect communities over corporations, and tell the DEQ to deny permits for the dirty, dangerous Southeast Supply Enhancement Project today! #NoSSEP

3. Send an online comment to the governor:

Dear Governor Stein,

I have seen local governments such as the town of Midway, city of Greensboro, and Guilford, Forsyth and Davidson counties raise concerns and ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to deny Williams Transco’s proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement Project. I join those voices.

I am concerned about the expansion of methane gas pipelines in North Carolina, which would fuel Duke Energy’s proposed buildout of methane gas-fired power plants. This overarching plan could increase electric bills for residential customers.

The construction of the SSEP project would pollute waterways and harm wildlife habitat along the route. Notably, the proposed SSEP crosses waterways in the Jordan Lake and Randleman Lake watersheds, which together provide drinking water for more than one million North Carolinians. In addition, portions of the SSEP pipeline would run alongside Mountain Valley Pipeline’s proposed Southgate project, which would exacerbate water quality impacts.

I am also concerned that Transco has proposed to use polluting methane gas-fired combustion turbines for its expansions to compressor stations 150 and 155 in North Carolina, rather than installing electric turbines as it has done in Virginia, Alabama, and South Carolina. DEQ needs to thoroughly analyze the project’s air quality impacts on communities near the compressor stations, where residents are already overburdened by pollution.

Please direct the DEQ to deny the air and water quality permits for the dangerous SSEP project. Thank you.
