LEXINGTON, N.C. — On Thursday, May 28, residents and advocates will hold a community meeting to discuss multiple methane gas projects proposed in Davidson and Davie counties.
Davidson County is at a pivotal moment, facing the rapid expansion of methane gas infrastructure that could reshape the region for decades to come. Duke Energy is proposing to build massive methane gas-fired power plants in the heart of rural agricultural land along the Yadkin River. Williams Transco is pursuing building the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project or SSEP, a high-pressure methane gas pipeline set to run beside residential neighborhoods, schools, sensitive waterways and churches.
At the meeting, attendees will have a chance to learn more about Duke’s proposed projects and their potential impacts, connect with other community members and advocates, and learn how to help protect the community. This meeting will also be an opportunity to hear updates on the status of the Transco SSEP pipeline and to discuss ways to ensure Transco follows safety and environmental procedures as it clears land. Refreshments will be provided.
WHEN: Thursday, May 28, 6:30-8 p.m.
WHERE: Reeds United Methodist Church (4731 W Old Hwy 64, Lexington, NC 27295)
WHO: Davidson and Davie county residents, Clean Water for North Carolina, Appalachian Voices
These projects raise serious concerns about public health and Davidson County’s long-term economic stability. Methane gas projects of this capacity can place a considerable strain on the community through increased air and water pollution, lower property values and higher electric bills.
