Appalachian Land Trusts

There are a number of land trusts throughout the Southeast. Many promote the use of easements to protect natural resources and ensure their sustained use over time. Below are four land trusts in the Southern Appalachians that have experience with working lands easements, protecting forests, agricultural lands, and water resources. The Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust works to protect land in seven rural counties in northwestern North Carolina. The majority of their projects focus on working landscapes, including agricultural, pasture, and forest lands.

The Land Trust for the Little Tennessee (LTLT) is located in Franklin, NC, in the southeastern corner of the state. They are dedicated to conserving the rural lands, forests, and waters of the upper Little Tennessee Valley. LTLT has a program focused on sustainable forestry that promotes working forest conservation easements and manages demonstration forests.

The Foothills Land Conservancy is located in east Tennessee, focusing on protecting the agricultural and scenic resources of the area around the Great Smoky Mountains.

The National Committee for the New River (NCNR) is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the natural and cultural resources of the New River and its watershed in North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. NCNR helps landowners voluntarily protect their land along the New River and its major tributaries.
