Virginia's moratorium on utility shutoffs for customers of rural electric cooperatives, Appalachian Power, Dominion Energy and Old Dominion Power ended on August 31. Other utilities are already shutting off water, gas and electric services. In the hottest months of the year, this is no time to leave Virginians without electricity for cooling and water for drinking— especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Appalachian Voices is seeking personal stories about how this will impact people in Virginia so we can try and improve the policies around utility debt during this health crisis and beyond. Your story can help demonstrate how the pandemic and poverty are impacting people's ability to access these critical services. Please share as much as you feel comfortable. You are able to take the survey anonymously. Thank you.
