Dominion Energy Virginia wants to charge its customers almost $1 billion now and a total of $3.5 billion over this decade to “modernize” the electric distribution grid.
According to experts, certain investments like smart meters and data management systems can be used to support energy efficiency and integration of rooftop solar and home battery storage. This could provide the clean, modern grid Virginians want. But if regulators at the State Corporation Commission do not scrutinize the process closely, Dominion could end up spending an immense amount of our money without ever enabling a truly modern grid.
In the words of one expert, the plan that Dominion has submitted to the SCC actually works “against a dynamic, multi-directional, modernized grid, rather than incentivizing progress towards customer engagement, improved demand side management, and stronger utilization of distributed energy resources.”
What does this mean? A “gold-plated” grid that provides no benefits to you or the environment. Act now and tell the SCC to reject Dominion’s plan until the company proves each investment it makes with your money will enable a clean and efficient electric grid!
