The rules that protect our nation’s waterways from toxic power plant waste have not been updated since Michael Jackson’s Thriller was the all the rage. Now that’s scary!
However, at long last, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is finally working to update those standards.
With over 80% of coal plants in the country currently allowed to dump heavy metals into our waterways with no limits, we need better protections in place. These Clean Water Act standards, known as the Effluent Limitation Guidelines, could prevent up to 5.3 billion pounds of those toxic metals from making into our waterways.
We need you to speak out. Industry has been working to influence the process and weaken these standards so that they continue to use our waterways as their own industrial dumping grounds.
