Help Stop A Coal Ash Disaster in Congress

Americans Stand Up for Their Right to Clean Water

There is a danger of a serious coal ash spill– into our nation’s Transportation bill.

An unrelated and dangerous amendment was recently added to the “must-pass” House Transportation bill that would allow industry to continue to endanger the physical safety and personal health of communities through the unsafe storage of toxic coal ash.

This amendment, essentially crafted by the extremist right-wing think thank tank American Legislative Exchange Council, would halt the U.S. Environmental Protection’s Agency’s participatory rule-making process. Over 450,000 citizens have asked the EPA to issue strong safeguards for coal ash.

A “conference” of House and Senate members are now charged with hammering out the final version of the Transportation bill.

Coal ash, the toxic remnants of burning coal for electricity, contains a whole host of heavy metals like arsenic, selenium, and lead. It is mostly stored in large, unlined lagoons where it can and often does leach contaminants in our waterways.

TAKE ACTION: Please ask your Senators to keep this dirty coal ash provision out of our nation’s Transportation bill.
