Located in our Boone, N.C. office, the North Carolina Campaign Assistant will help the North Carolina team with various aspects of our campaign to oppose improperly stored coal ash across the state and to prevent the construction of fracked-gas pipelines. Our campaign focuses on working in relationship with people who live near coal-fired power plants in the Western half of the state as well as engaging with our online base of supporters across the country.

Anyone can apply, but Government Studies, Environmental Science and/or Communications Majors are strongly encouraged.

Intern activities include (depending on strengths and needs), but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating tabling events and speaking events across North Carolina 
  • Updating our Facebook fans and Twitter followers on our work 
  • Inputting new sign-ups into our database
  • Helping develop messaging for online and offline communications (i.e. blogs, emails, brochures, fact sheets, letters to the editor, Opinion Editorials) for our Cleaning Up Coal Ash campaign
  • Phone banking our supporter lists to update them on campaign
  • Running our volunteer nights related to North Carolina campaign work (dependent on schedule)
  • Supporting community outreach, including canvassing and community meetings, with residents impacted by coal ash or threatened by fracking
  • Supporting data collection for air and water monitoring for coal ash contamination

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Committed to environmental issues in the Appalachian region
  • Highly detail orientated
  • Great communication skills- ability to make cold calls a huge plus 
  • Organizational skills
  • Can meet deadlines and work well in a fast-paced office
  • Sense of humor
  • Excitement to learn about the inner workings of non-profits
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc)
  • Self-starter and can work somewhat independently
  • Use of Facebook and Twitter
