Our Energy Democracy for Appalachia campaign is focused on shifting the existing fossil fuel-reliant, monopolistic electric utility model to one that is just, equitable, and reflects the values of communities across North Carolina. To achieve this goal, we are working with communities to support local renewable energy production and to stop utilities from charging unfair fees and polluting our soil, air, and water. We are working to create a system that allows ratepayers to have a choice in their source of energy and allows communities to have their voices heard in the regulatory process for electric utilities.
The research intern will assist our program by gathering information on various products and services offered by North Carolina rural electric cooperatives, including energy efficiency and renewable energy support and incentives.

The outreach intern will assist our program by helping set up presentations and listening sessions across the state where our team will share information on the ways monopoly electric utilities like Duke Energy have harmed the air, soil, water and people of North Carolina. The intern will be instrumental in our efforts to listen to what communities want for our state’s energy production and supporting them in taking local action.

This position will be located in our Boone, N.C. office. Part-time to full-time; ideally about 20 hours per week, and lasting through the semester. Additional hours and responsibilities can be added to create a full-time role for academic qualifications. This is an unpaid position.

Intern activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting online research and power mapping communities across the state
  • Making phone calls and emails to schedule and promote presentations and events
  • Attending and documenting events
  • Recording notes and adding new supporter sign-ups into our database
  • Assisting with social media promotion
  • Other outreach and research activities to support the team

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Committed to environmental and energy issues in the Appalachian region, as well as a passion for supporting community-led efforts
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Should be proficient with Google Suite (Docs and Sheets) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc)
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including ability to make cold calls
  • A basic understanding of renewable energy and the problems with fossil fuels, or motivation to learn
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multitask
  • Sense of humor
