A Conversation About Co-ops

Members of Powell Valley Electric Cooperative gathered in Cumberland Gap, Tenn., to talk about the co-op’s structure and their role as member-owners. Forum participants heard from the Tennessee Energy Savings team as well as members of PVEC and other East Tennessee co-ops. Read more about the forum and learn how to host one in your community.

MLK Day of Service

Every year, Appalachian State University challenges their students to participate in a day of volunteering in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Our North Carolina team had twelve volunteers for the day to help us connect with community members and spread the word about our home weatherization event. George Lewis is joining our team as the N.C. Research Assistant. He’s currently a master’s student at Appalachian State University studying appropriate technology with a focus on renewable energy systems. While at Appalachian Voices, he hopes to educate electric co-op members and revitalize the Energy Savings Action Center. Learn about all of our staff and interns.

Power Companies Challenge TVA Rate Hikes
Municipal utilities and electric co-ops are challenging the Tennessee Valley Authority as the energy supplier looks to implement more fixed charges and increase rates for local power providers. One Tennessee co-op has been particularly outspoken about the impact the new rates will have on its members . Read more about local utilities standing up to TVA.

Take Action!

If you live in Tennessee, show your support for clean, affordable energy by signing a petition from the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy that opposes the Tennessee Valley Authority’s rate hikes for residential customers. Sign the petition for clean electricity bills!


TVA Board Meeting
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is the largest public power company in the U.S., serving nearly all of Tennessee and parts of six surrounding states. TVA will be holding a public board meeting this Friday, February 16, at their headquarters in Chattanooga, Tenn. The public listening session should be starting at 8:30 a.m.
