Bringing energy democracy to Virginia

A series of presentations and workshops on energy democracy is beginning in the Commonwealth of Virginia!

The southwest portion of the state has been known as an energy-producing region for a long time. And though Southwest Virginia communities have given so much over the decades to power our nation, the region is left with hardly any choices about how that power makes its way into homes and businesses.

Across Virginia, communities deserve an energy system that serves their interests. There’s no way around it: electricity is an essential part of 21st century life. In an “energy democracy,” the people who use electricity (that’s us!) should have greater influence over decisions like where our electricity comes from and how much it costs.

Bring your electricity bill (or several of them)! We will discuss some of the barriers to cheaper, cleaner energy, some of the solutions underway across the country and how you can get involved.

A native of northern Virginia, Peter holds a J.D. from George Mason University and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. He joined Appalachian Voices in 2016 as our Virginia Program Manager with a keen passion for transitioning the region from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy.
