Thank you for your excellent article. My people, like yours, have been in Southeast Kentucky for generations upon generations, and in some situations, since before Kentucky was a state and America was a nation. It has been a great source of frustration to watch how my people have been treated like the Mordocks who exist to crawl into the depths of the earth to provide for all the beautiful people everywhere else, and who, at the same time are treated as comedic fodder by narrow-minded people who are ignorant of the real sacrifices and dangers the deep miners face everyday.

I, for one, would prefer to end mining completely, and for our new President make a real move towards alternative energy by declassifying industrial hemp as a drug, and allowing Kentuckians everywhere in the state to start cultivating this valuable crop and alternative form of fuel. Once King Coal, who has, for generations, kept their thumb on the populace of coal mining counties, loses its influence and other industries can move in, the majority of Appalachian people will have the promise of clean, safe jobs instead of the very precious few in government, medicine and education.
